STACK INFASTRUCTURE

Reducing fiber needs by 80% at Portland data center

Phase III of the data center upgrade brought key systems together. Mechanical equipment, energy monitoring, and rear-door chilled water cooling now work in sync. The result? A smarter, more scalable, and fully redundant fiber network, with 80% less fiber required.

What We Did

STACK Infrastructure is an award-winning industry leader in building, owning and operating highly efficient, cost effective wholesale data centers. Each of its national facilities meet or exceed the highest institutional standards for data centers in all operational categories of availability, security, connectivity and physical resilience.

This data center had already had two phases of upgrades with OTI. For Phase III, we integrated everything from mechanical systems and energy monitoring to the tenant’s unique air rear chilled water doors. We also expanded the fiber network we built during Phases I and II, using 36 DIN-rail and rack-mounted switches across control cabinets and IT closets. The result is a solid, scalable, and redundant setup built to last.

We brought together a powerhouse of tools: EasyIO and GC5 iSMA controllers, Belimo Energy Valves, SkySpark, Niagara, and DG Lux. Since this was our third time on-site, we made sure it could all plug right into the existing interface so building engineers and tenants could easily keep tabs on operations.

Challenges

Uptime was critical. We met strict redundancy requirements while delivering under serious time pressure, especially during deployment. The entire team pulled together to make sure everything ran smoothly from day one.

The building layout was a challenge, with chillers on the first floor, pumps on the second, and cooling towers on the roof. We integrated the tenant’s chilled water doors using GC5 controllers with hand-off auto relays, giving local engineers more flexibility and a reliable backup in case of emergency.

Results

In total, we connected 503 devices and 19,200 points into a flexible network that can grow as the tenant moves into the next data hall.

Thanks to Optigo Connect’s smart design, we reduced fiber needs by 80% and used the bespoke interface to get a large, multi-service network online quickly and efficiently.
